On Friday 8th September, Charlton Morris celebrated the end of our 4th year in business. A great day and night was had by all to acknowledge what has been another successful 12 months.
I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on our recent achievements in what has been a real ‘coming of age’ year for Charlton Morris.
A major event for us came at the start of 2017 when we expanded our office significantly, adding a new reception, meeting rooms and ‘break-out’ area. This was in line with our aim of consistent, continued headcount growth, but perhaps more importantly aligned with the new health and well-being initiatives we introduced at the same time.
We introduced free gym memberships and massages for all employees, along with 2 extended lunch hours a week to try and improve our employee’s lives outside of work, as a result we have seen a really positive impact in terms of attitude and wellness throughout the company.
From a more practical business perspective, we’ve made some big steps too - we’ve now placed in well over 50 countries, with more than 75% of our placements in Year 4 happening outside the UK. In terms of territories, our busiest markets were the UK, Germany and the USA, and the growth of revenue for us in the US has been a particularly pleasing statistic that we will continue to build on in Year 5.
Throughout the year we placed more than 250 candidates all over the world, and 62% of those placements were classed as ‘repeat’ business (i.e. clients we’ve worked with in the past), which really aligns with our values. Our aim is always to create lasting relationships – further attempting to move away from some of the stereotypes that can still haunt our industry.
It’s these continuing relationships that have enabled us to further increase the proportion of work we do in a retained manner which, of course is always preferred. This means we can consistently deliver the absolute highest level of service and quality of candidates to all of our clients.
Looking ahead to Year 5, we’ve made a couple of changes that we’re already really excited about.
Firstly, we’ve had one of our Business Managers move into a new Internal Recruitment and Training role, meaning that we can have a renewed focus on delivering the best-in-class training to all of the consultants that start with us and those more experienced who look to progress throughout the company, helping us achieve our increasing headcount and revenue targets.
Next, we’ve re-branded our Energy division to Charlton Morris Industrial. This is something that we’ve been thinking about for a while and, given the diversity of markets that our Energy team have expanded into, we felt that this name better reflected the work that we do in their markets. Charlton Morris Industrial is a much better representation of the areas we work in such as Logistics, Automation, Chemicals, Water, Industrial Software in addition to our existing presence in the Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy markets.
Finally, we started Year 4 by being nominated as one of LinkedIn’s Most Socially Engaged Staffing Agencies in EMEA, which was a huge achievement for us, and we are really excited to announce that we have started Year 5 with more celebrations, as we picked up ‘Best Executive Search Firm’ and ‘The Chairman’s Award for Business’ at this year’s Recruitment Business Awards, hosted by The Drum.
Our Nordic office has also been recognised recently, being placed 5th in Supana’s 2017 Headhunting report – testament to the great work our team in Copenhagen are continuing to do as they come up to their 2 year anniversary.
One job that hasn’t been finished, despite the celebrations, is our CSR effort. We’re continuing to work with St Gemma’s Hospice, a fantastic local charity in Leeds, to try and hit our £10,000 target for 2017. So far we’ve just passed the £9,000 mark, and walked a collective 1,000 miles in completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks in August, but we still have some way to go to hit our goal! I’m extremely proud of everything that we’ve achieved in the last four years, and can’t wait to see what the next year brings. We’re aiming to be as ambitious as we always have, meaning working in more countries, growing our headcount further and continuing our expansion.
